Zen Buddhist Chaplain
Gareth was first introduced to Zen practice in 1966 by the late Zen master Joshu Sasaki Roshi, founder of the Rinzai-ji lineage based in Los Angeles. Gareth intensified his practice beginning in 1999 under the direction of Eshin John Godfrey, Abbott of the Vancouver Zen Centre. (The centre operated from 1967 to 2022.) Gareth was an ordained monk with the centre for ten years, and has served as the Zen Buddhist Chaplain at UBC since 2007. Gareth holds a BA Degree from Reed College in Portland, Oregon, and worked as a freelance writer following his immigration to Canada in 1972.
